|Gustavo Costa received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Arts Institute of São Paulo State University. Still in São Paulo, he took lessons with Paul Galbraith before entering the guitar classes of Franz Halász in Germany and Pablo Márquez in France. Back to Brazil, Mr. Costa specialized on arrangements of violin music of Bartók and J. S. Bach, receiving a Doctor’s Degree from the University of São Paulo.
Gustavo Costa has been a prize winner at guitar competitions in Brazil and France, as well as two prestigious competitions in Spain: the Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Andrés Segovia and the Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Francisco Tárrega, where in 2003 he received 2nd prize and the Audience Favorite’s prize. As a soloist with orchestra, he has performed guitar concertos in France, Spain, Italy and Brazil with orchestras such as the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Ciutat de Torrent Orchestra, Molise Symphony Orchestra, São Paulo University Symphony Orchestra, Ribeirão Preto Symphony Orchestra, Barra Mansa Symphony Orchestra and the Petrobrás Symphony Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro.
His performances have received critical acclaim, such as this review of his début in Germany: “Mr. Costa demonstrates exemplary how beautiful a guitar can sound. His performance combines virtuosity with a magical sonority.” – Augsburger Allgemeine.
Gustavo Costa teaches guitar and viola caipira (ten-string guitar) at the University of Sao Paulo in Ribeirão Preto.
